The kitchen is the heart of the home. ~Unknown
It’s only taken almost three years, but I can officially state that finally, our kitchen is done!
I can’t believe that we moved into our condo almost three years ago this coming summer. I guess time flies when we’ve been busy making our new house into OUR new home.
From the time we bought our new house, I knew I wanted white cabinets and soapstone counters. All the appliances were in good shape, so we decided to forgo on replacing them.
So we had the cabinets painted and added the soapstone shortly after we moved in. But the more we lived here, the more we disliked all the appliances, especially the dishwasher, which was horrible for loading! You can read and see more photos here.
I know many commented that they loved the white appliances, but maybe it’s because we lived with the old white ones or whatever, but we decided to replace them with stainless steel. We finally went out and bought the much-needed new appliances. After everything was installed, Mr. Cottage and I kept commenting on how different our kitchen looked and how we loved it. We did a lot of checking around and finally settled on KitchenAid. It’s one of the few that are Made In America, other than the microwave. We found out that ALL microwaves are made overseas. We also found out that KitchenAid has some type of protection over their stainless, which doesn’t mark up as much as the others and it cleans more easily, with water and a microfiber cloth. At the time we bought these, there was also a great rebate for anyone buying all the appliances.
Remember this photo from this posting? This was to make room for our new refrigerator. The cabinet was taken out and the trim around it was cut off. We also had a line put in for the water to the refrigerator.
I love having the freezer on the bottom and the French doors.
I still want to buy a couple of lazy Susan’s to put on a couple of the shelves. If you haven’t shopped for a new refrigerator lately, I highly recommended this type. We open the refrigerator more than the freezer, so bending down and not being able to see everything is no longer an issue.
The larger door took up more room in our small kitchen and now it’s just easier to maneuver when someone is in the refrigerator and you’re trying to walk around them.
Mr. Cottage has one more small project to do. Unfortunately, our cupboard door won’t open all the way (even after the the trim was cut) because the hinges are too high on the refrigerator. So he’s going to remove the doors and trim them. Fortunately, I don’t have to get into that cupboard very often.
Any dishwasher is better than the one we had and we do love this one. It’s so quiet, you can barely hear it!
We chose the one with the controls on the top so little fingers won’t be playing with the controls, if you know what I mean.
Some dishwashers even have a third rack, the top being for silverware. We chose this one and we love the way it separates the silverware so they don’t spoon together and not get cleaned. For those who don’t care for this feature, the top just pops off and then the silverware can be put in without the spacers.
We love how it looks with the large window and clean lines. Because we didn’t have a gas line to the stove, we had to have one installed, but it was so worth it!
We actually bought a microwave/convection oven. Have you ever used a convection oven? We had one when we wintered in Florida and loved it. Yes, that’s a paper towel on our turntable. I always have a microwave safe paper towel to catch anything that spills out vs having to clean the entire turntable. I’ve used this idea for years.
I would had loved the slide-in model, but they are so much more expensive. The other thing we discovered is that most gas ranges have 5 burners. Our old gas range, in our previous house, had all the same size burners. The one above has three different size burners and comes with a grill.
Our drawer underneath is much smaller than our electric range, so now I’m working on other options for storing our fry pans.
And now that we have our new appliances and the kitchen is finished, I had to buy a new towel. I finally have a place near the sink where I can hang one.
I can hardly wait to show you more of the projects we’ve been working on.
I’m sharing at the here.
