Sometimes in the middle of all the ordinary, something extraordinary shows up. ~Karianne Wood
Exactly two years ago, I wrote a blog post with a detailed tutorial for adding chicken wire to a chair for flowers. If you missed it, you can see it here.
I had decided not to paint the chair. I thought it would show off the flowers and look perfect next to our rustic cottage just as it was.
There was enough of a nice golden stain left on it to make the flowers look lovely in it.
We really only use our cottage for 3 months during the summer, so I figured if I left it under this full shaded tree, it would be somewhat protected for those 3 months. Then it would be stored inside for the other 9 months. Remember, we live in Michigan which gets cold and snowy in the winter months.
Sometime after Labor Day, Mr. Cottage starts putting outdoor items away along with getting everything else ready for the winter. Because a lot of his work involves removing the dock and taking the boats out and covering them, I usually stay home.
When I came up for Memorial Day weekend, I happened to notice this chair was sitting outside next to the stones for our fireplace. That’s when I found out that the love of my life, left this chair out in the elements for the entire winter! Mr. Cottage said he didn’t have room in our shed for it this past year! REALLY? To say I was a bit miffed is an understatement.
Just look at the photo on the left and the one in the middle. You can see the difference. Most of the stain was gone. I wasn’t going to leave it as it was because it needed some kind of protective covering. If I stained it, I would have to sand every nook and cranny beforehand; so I decided the quickest and easiest remedy was to prime and paint it.
I ended up painting it with Home Depot’s exterior satin enamel, Behr Premium Plus Ultra.
The color I chose is called Just A Fairytale. It’s the perfect purple!
Here it is July and I just planted these flowers. I was away for 10 days in Texas and then I had to get this chair painted.
I’ll make sure to take another photo before the end of summer to show you how much these flowers will have grown and filled the seat.
