I don’t know about everyone else, but we had a busier summer than what we thought it would be; and it went so fast! Here it is September already and the kids are all back in school. There’s been a lot of things going on around our house and cottage that I haven’t really shared with you, so I thought it’s time for another Tuesday’s Tidbits to fill you in with this and that. But first an announcement:
SHARE YOUR STYLE LINK PARTY WILL BE STARTING UP AGAIN ON WEDNESDAY, SEPTEMBER 5 AT 7:00 PM EST! PLEASE COME JOIN THE PARTY!

Our family from Texas flew to Michigan and we were able to get all the grandkids together again. I’m happy to say that our granddaughter, Sophia, is now in high school and….she made the varsity swimming team! We’re all so very proud of her! Our grandson, Adriel, has entered middle school and is playing football. Corbin is 7 years old now and is entering 2nd grade. Time is just flying by!
While our Texas family was here, we taught them how to play Qwirkle. All I can say is they all loved it and I know they’ll be getting this game for them to play at home now. We first learned it with my BFF a number of years ago. In addition to games, we went to the zoo and played miniature golf and arcade games. While they were here, they rented a car and drove to Cedar Point amusement park, as well as driving to the Upper Peninsula of Michigan to visit Pictured Rocks.
After they left, I had Corbin for a couple of days. The Grand Rapids Public Museum had two special exhibits going on that Corbin just loved. Be The Astronaut is just what it says. I even found it fascinating.
After I was able to get him away from flying the spacecraft, we saw the exhibit called Zoo In Me. It was all about microbes and viruses. The photo above is one of my favorites that I took of Corbin.
Grand Haven, Michigan
My best friend, Kelly, and her husband came to Grand Haven for a few days. Their daughters gifted them a few days stay at a cottage in Grand Haven. So we had to meet up with them and went to my favorite breakfast restaurant in Grand Haven, called Morning Star Cafe. It’s literally a small cafe that you wait forever to get into and they have the largest menu I’ve ever seen for breakfast. Every time I go, I try something new. These were called Oatmeal Cakes, but it’s oatmeal pancakes with blueberries and brown sugar. Kelly and I both had this and it was so delicious and filling!
After breakfast we went out to the pier. It had just opened a day or two before this, after being closed for renovations. There’s also a catwalk that will be placed back on the pier in another year or two. It was extremely windy and we walked a bit more, but not all the way out. The waves were building.
If you look to the left side of the pier, you can see the whitecaps. Only a few weeks earlier, several people drowned right where those whitecaps are.
Mr. Cottage spotted this red-eared slider turtle on our walkway. We have a retention pond in back of our condo, but for some reason, it walked quite a distance to get where we saw it.
Wasps, Toads, and Giant Spiders
Relax, I have no photos to show you, but we had all three in our cottage for Labor Day weekend! I was talking on the phone with a friend from Florida when I noticed a slow flying wasp and next thing I knew it was flying right towards me. I’m yelling “BEE, BEE” and telling my friend I have to go. Mr. Cottage comes out and swings a towel at it. It lands on the floor, where he stepped on it. End of story….NO! It flew around and we found it. It was on the floor again, but Mr. Cottage was able to squash it with a tissue which he threw into the wastebasket. End of story….NO, AGAIN! I was it crawling around in the wastebasket! I quickly took the bag, tied it tightly and took it outdoors to Mr. Cottage telling him not to open it and to leave it outdoors.
Then the next evening, we saw Sadie sniffing around in an area where she doesn’t usually go. Mr. Cottage got a flashlight and neither of us saw anything. Eventually, courtesy of Sadie, Mr. Cottage found a toad (INSIDE OUR COTTAGE). Go figure! He used a paper towel and took it outdoors.
Then the following night, I’m sitting on the couch with the laptop when I notice something and next thing I see this giant and fast spider going across the computer screen! EEEK! MR. Cottage thought I was about to throw the laptop, but I was reacting fast to get it on the floor. Long story short, the spider is no more!
But look what I found when I arrived back home on Labor Day! A lonely, but lovely sunflower growing in the front of our condo. I would love have a few of these every year in the same spot. This more than made up for the wasp, toad and spider!
